Maintaining Sound Mental Health in Stressful Times

It isn’t hard to see why so many of us have reached our breaking points when it comes to stress. Between contending with a global pandemic for a third straight year, rising cost of living, demanding jobs and various other stressors, life is liable to seem like an anxiety dream from which you can’t awaken. So, if you’ve begun to treat your mental health like an afterthought, there’s no time like the present to correct this. 

Seek Professional Assistance 

There’s an unfortunate stigma placed on mental health in this country. Even in 2022, when mental health struggles are receiving more recognition than ever, many people are hesitant to seek professional assistance. In the minds of some individuals, counseling and therapy and for people whose mental health issues leave them unable to function.

As such, if someone is able to get through their daily routine and project an image of sound mental health, they must not require professional help. 

Needless to say, this manner of thinking is incredibly flawed. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t stand to benefit from mental health assistance, regardless of how content they seem.

Even if your mental health issues aren’t overwhelming, you have nothing to lose by seeking the assistance of counselors, therapists and other relevant professionals. 

Solid mental health assistance can help you get to the root of long-standing issues and problems that have only recently started to bother you and provide you with the tools you need to effectively combat them. Become Comfortable with Setting Boundaries 

Many of us exacerbate our mental health issues by refusing to set clear boundaries. As a result, people tend to take advantage of us and regard us as doormats – sometimes without even meaning to.

So, if you regularly agree to take on tasks that are immensely stressful and unpleasant, you stand to benefit from setting boundaries in both your personal and professional lives. For example, if you have any coworkers who habitually foist their work onto you or expect an unrealistic degree of assistance, make it clear that while you’re happy to help out on occasion, you have more than enough on your own work to attend to.

Similarly, if any friends, family members or neighbors regularly impose upon you for favors, you should start saying no – especially if the favors in question are a drag on your time, energy or financial resources. 

People-pleasers tend to avoid boundaries out of fear that the people in their lives will come to dislike or abandon them. While it’s true that some people may not be amenable to the boundaries you set, these are often people you don’t need in your life.

Someone who admonishes you for practicing self-care is someone who should be subjected to boundaries.

Get Involved with Charitable Causes 

Facilitating positive change in the lives of others can provide you with a profound sense of satisfaction and help cultivate a positive self-image. So, if you have the bandwidth and inclination, you may benefit from getting involved in assorted charity and community outreach programs.

From volunteering at homeless shelters and soup kitchens to organizing food drives, walkathons and community cleanup efforts, you’re likely to find no shortage of ways to make a difference.

There’s no question that we’re living through stressful times. In addition to larger issues like a global pandemic, climate change and political strife, many of us are facing a litany of problems in our personal lives, as well.

That being the case, it’s easy to see why a growing number of individuals are struggling to keep their mental health intact.
